The frozen river moves
forward and out, up
and out—
the water beneath the ice
takes its usual course,
the ice swells toward
minimum resistance,
toward sky, then bank.
Neither will converge
though both collapse
into the river
as the river rises
and spreads. Winter
flood or winter street,
every surface
slick and, for us,
for now, impassable.
